The 2008-2009 ski season is sadly coming to a close in the upcoming days and weeks (depending on what resort you like to ski at)…but don’t be too sad just yet, there’s plenty of fun to be had before you take the rack off the roof of your car and put those skis in the storage closet until next year:
Pond Skimming at the Canyons SpingGruv! This is a really fun event that gets lots of coverage every year. On March 28th, (this upcoming Saturday) participants can sign up (beginning at 8am on the 28th) to compete for style and skill in a contest where everyone dresses up in crazy get-ups and attempts to cross a 100 foot pond on skis or a snowboard. This is a really fun event to watch in case you’re not into getting wet and muddy as a contestant. If you do indeed want to show off your pond skimming technique, click here for a link to register.
The last day of skiing at Park City Mountain is also always fun. PCMR closes on April 12th and there’s always lots of skiers and snowboarders out on the slopes that day dressed in hilarious costumes (watch for the fur jock strap guy). There’s also some activities for kids involving Easter Eggs and bunnies! AND - at the end of your last ski day for the season at PCMR you MUST head to The Store (a great local bar in the outdoor shops area at the base of PCMR) for cheap PBR in cans and a huge party featuring live music. It’s fun…for real!
And then there’s my personal favorite, Deer Valley Resort….there’s not as much of the goofy costume contingency at DV at the close of the ski season (but you will see some of that)…instead you might plan to take an extra hour or two on the beach at Silver Lake that day. Sip some beer, get a tan and love up every last minute of the gorgeous slope side elegance! AND - if you are courageous, you might consider a tradition Rob and his friends created for themselves some years back…I’ve blogged about the Deer Valley Six Pack before - here’s a recap:
April 1st here in Park City is the traditional day Rob and a group of friends spend at Deer Valley skiing while dressed up in goofy outfits. Not only do they dress up, they also partake in what they call the “Deer Valley Six Pack”. There just so happen to be six places on the Deer Valley Resort mountain where one can purchase beer. Rob and his friends challenge themselves every April 1st to stop by each and every one of the six locations and purchase a beer. They ski from place to place taking some great runs and in between - sipping cold beers. By the end of the day the group (generally dressed in bear suits, clown costumes, eighties metallic one-piece ski suits and rainbow wig helmet covers) finally comes back down to Silver Lake Lodge to have the last beer of the day and toast their accomplishing the “Deer Valley Six Pack”!!! So if you happen to be at Deer Valley on the 1st of April and notice a slightly wobbly group of friends dressed in silly costumes as they tool around the slopes, don’t forget to tell Rob “Happy Birthday!” or even to join the group yourself!
So turn that frown upside down and get ready to make the best of the rest of the ski season we have this year. Yay for Spring! A fresh start is always a good thing and this year that counts double!

Great post about all the great things to do in Park City at the end of the season! Minor correction, Park City Mountain Resort closes on the 12th not the 14th. And you can join in the all-mountain hunt for the “golden egg” that boasts a 2009-2010 season pass to Park City Mountain Resort. There will be two of them hidden around the mountain. Get up here early! The lifts open at 9 am.
