Friday Night’s Alright Alright!
Friday! Friday! Friday!
Yep, it’s finally here!
Don’t get me wrong, I love my job and all…but sometimes the weekend just feels so good…
Even here in our little hamlet of Park City, Utah there is lots to do.
People who haven’t been to Utah often get the impression that the “state is dry” or that “it’s hard to get a drink” here….or that “there’s no bars or night life”….but that - my friends - is simply not the case!
And to prove it to you, I will now present you with a list of things to do on Friday night in Park City…and if you have anything to add, feel free to comment and let us know…we can’t be everywhere all the time and there might (just maybe) be a few things to do we’ve missed…but I doubt it
Things To Do On Friday Night in Park City, Utah:
-Go to Jean Louis’ Restaurant at Heber Avenue and Swede Alley just behind Main Street….Jean Louis’ (or JL as us groupies like to call it
has a great bar area where you can usually slide up and order a drink from the friendly and helpful staff…JL also has some TERRIFIC food options on their ever morphing menu…I usually order wine when I’m at JL but a Grey Hound or a Kettle and Soda with Lime does the trick too…and as for the menu items…well I love the Garden Vegetable Salad or the Veal Piccata…but mostly the whole menu makes me salivate and the atmosphere is pretty wonderful as well. For a nice cozy yet socially energized evening, try Jean Louis…we’ll be at the corner of the bar waiting for you! And during the slow season there are deals to be had at JL - just look in the Park Record
-Sushi! Sometimes, on a Friday you just feel like getting a group of friends together and going out for some sushi and sake…and in Park City you have a few choices - you can hit Flying Sumo for a fun atmosphere and great Tuna Nachos…or Oishi where you can sit at the sushi bar and get half off rolls in the off season…or try Yuki Arashi for a more modern and upscale feel…and when it comes to sake with your sushi, Utah is great because you are free to buy sake at the local liquor store and bring it with, then all you have to pay for is the corkage fee…which is minimal - this is a great option available by law in all restaurants and it can save you money - especially when you can eat as much sushi as I can
-Stay in!…get a blanket, light a fire, get a movie on-demand or cozy up to a book…pop a bottle of wine, and dial up Speedy Fernandez to order take-out from a great list of restaurants in town. When you’re hanging out in a ski town there’s nothing like staying in every now and then, putting on comfy clothes and resting up to rip some crazy turns on the mountain the next day…we love to use Speedy Fernandez for delivery from local restaurants because he delivers from some of our favorite places….AND Mr. Fernandez and his team are super nice and accommodating and love to make their customers happy…you don’t know how to reach old Speedy??…have no fear - his number is 435.631.0040 or 435.631.0032…and you can get to the list of restaurants that he delivers from via this link I recommend Nick’s Greek Cafe or El Chubasco but then again Cafe Trang and Butcher’sare always delish as well…and don’t forget to tell Speedy that Rachel sent you…then you’ll get the extra special treatment! ;)
-”Dancing” you say? Really, you want to go dancing after all that outdoor exercise? Well, sure…I mean of course, we have Harry O’s for all you dancing queens and you won’t be sorry if you try it! Harry O’s is located right in the middle of Main Street and it offers the best dancing and club scene in town…They have great musical acts come through in the busy season and there’s always a lot of people watching to be had…Now if you go in to Harry O’s and you see a young man on the stage in a suit and tie, that’s most likely Costa…you’ll know him because he’ll be yelling into the mic to rev up the crowd…I don’t think he ever sleeps ;) and then there’s the dancing girls on the bar who have that miraculous lack of cellulite that mesmerizes the regular girls like me…so if you’re in the mood to party…Harry O’sis the place to go - just try and stand there near the bar and not be magnetically pulled to the dance floor! We dare you! But be warned - this place is certainly a club scene and you have to be in the mood to really enjoy it.
Okay, that’s all I’ve got for now. Have a great weekend and watch for our next posts…I promise Rob will be getting you some nice, useful Market Updates right away because we know how you all eat those up!
Happy Friday!Howl-o-Ween Dog Parade on Main Street Y’all
So what are you and your pup going to do on Halloween? Well, before you put on your Sarah Palin or Ghostbuster costumes why not check out a Park City tradition…This dog parade involves:
Trick or Treating 3-5pm on Main Street with over 100 participating merchants.
Costumed Doggie Photo Op 4-5pm at Main Street Post Office; photos can be viewed next day at www.rightonmain.org.
Howl-O-Ween Dog Parade 5-5:30pm–Costumed dogs (on leashes, please) and their owners (who are hopefully dressed in corresponding costumes of varied creativity levels) will proceed from the Post Office to The Shops at The Village on Main.
Halloween Party After-Glow 5:30-6pm–more treats, activities and Halloween Safety Tips!
***So if you’re a local (and if you are…there’s a 95% chance you have at least one dog
or if you’re wishing you were a local…get your pup all gussied up and head over to the Post Office to join in the fun! Look for Rob and I, we’ll be the ones with the little black dog dressed like a pimp in purple leopard print velvet and a feathered hat!*** I’ll probably be at the Friends of Animals table selling hot cocoa, so come support a good cause while you’re out there, it will most likely be cold and you’ll be wanting a toasty beverage to warm your belly
Ski
So you want to come to Park City to get your ski on….well join the crowd! :)
There are three ski resorts in Park City in very close proximity that you can choose from…Deer Valley, Park City Mountain Resort and The Canyons.
Rob and I have to stand by our favorite resort Deer Valley when it comes to recommendations….but if you’re a snowboarder, Deer Valley is not the place for you as the slopes there don’t allow anybody but skiers like us.
Deer Valley:This is the place to go if you want luxury, lots of groomed slopes, great food options and the best customer service around. Deer Valley Resort offers it’s visitors a great variety of terrain and a totally high-end experience for the most demanding of skiers. This resort has been rated number one for the second time in a row by Ski Magazine and for good reason! The views are amazing at Deer Valley and so are the Mountain Hosts who give expert advice on which slopes to whoosh down. They dot the slopes and are available just about everywhere you turn as you exit the lifts at the tops of the mountains to answer your questions.
Park City Mountain Resort: The thrills are everywhere at Park City Mountain Resort. Skiing, snowboarding, tubing, sledding, laughing, screaming. They’re piled up even higher than the 360 inches of snow we average each year. That explains why we’re named among the top 10 family resorts in North America every year. This season looks to continue that distinction thanks to more than $10 million in improvements. These upgrades feature a new high-speed lift with access to more than 2,000 acres of terrain, a new gladed run, and the complete renovation of our Mid-Mountain Lodge. There truly is something for every member of the family.
Fortunately, getting here is not part of the adventure. The short 35-minute drive from Salt Lake City International Airport makes our resort among the most accessible winter destinations in the world. Just hop on one of more than 700 daily flights arriving in Salt Lake City and you could be on the mountain skiing or riding the very same day.
Park City Mountain Resort is a favorite of experienced skiers and snowboarders. SKI magazine readers voted it one of the top ten resorts in North America. The mountain boasts the largest superpipe in the country. And the four terrain parks have been ranked among the top ten by Transworld Snowboarding Magazine for five consecutive years. They’re the training ground of professional athletes like Shaun White and Tanner Hall. Park City was home to the 2002 Winter Olympics.
The Canyons: With 3 world-class lodging properties, 8 mountains, 3,700 acres of diverse terrain, 155 trails, 17 lifts and the Greatest Snow on Earth®, it’s no wonder The Canyons is your Ultimate Winter Playland.
Last year, The Canyons invested over $10 million in improvements to the resort. The installation of the all-new Dream-Catcher lift opened up an additional 200+ acres of pristine glades and natural trails. The upgrade of Tombstone express to a high-speed 6-pack and a major expansion at Red Pine Lodge gave guests an overall better experience allowing them to spend less time in the lines and more time on the slopes!
Golf
There are just oodles of great golf courses in Park City and we’re getting more all the time. Right now the highest rated course in the state is the Glenwild Golf Club which is located in the private gated community of the same name. This course was designed by Tom Fazio and can be played only by members and their guests. (Side note: Michael Jordan is a member at Glenwild and I’ve actually been sitting an Open House at a wonderful home and seen him golfing at Glenwild from the gorgeous view looking out of the home’s main living space!) We recommend you find yourself a member to cozy up to and get out there to see the beauty and challenge of this course for yourself. And once you decide you love it, give us a call and we’ll show you a house or lot out there so you can play any old day you choose!
Promontoty offers 2 signature courses, the Pete Dye Canyon course and the Jack Nicklaus Painted Valley course. Both are challenging in their own right. Give us a call to test your skills on these courses! In the future Promontory plans to expand to a Forest Richardson executive course (scheduled to start in summer 2009) and a Tom Weiskopf course that will come online shortly after the Richardson course.
Tuhaye is shaping up to be a wonderful course as well….they began the season with a few problems with their irrigation system, but that is fixed and the course is in great shape to enjoy for another month! With the Jordanelle views it is tough to beat a day at Tuhaye. Membership to the club is available when you purchase any Talisker property (Empire Pass or Tuhaye real estate).
If you have a flare for the public courses Solider Hollow and Wasatch courses (4 courses total) in Midway are fabulous! Right know is an amazing time to play the Wasatch Mtn course, because you get amazing views of the fall foliage….the Park City municipal course is a great track as well. It is not the longest, but has some tricks up its sleeve.

SUMMER CONCERT SERIES AT DEER VALLEY…R O C K S ! ! !
So you’re getting excited already about the August 31st Bob Dylan concert at Deer Valley in the loverly Park City…well I know how you feel.
I for one am not going to sit around on my laurels and wait for that concert…I mean YES I want to go and I will be there but in the mean time there are plenty of other great concerts to attend at Deer Valley.
Below is a complete list of all the concerts that will be going on. There are three groups or series of concerts and I’ve listed them below with descriptions of the differences between the the three.
Rob and I have been to many, many of these concerts and we’ve never been disappointed (even when it rained so hard my brie cheese got soggy and my red wine turned pink!).
So get out your blankets and plastic wine glasses and hit the Whole Foods (aka Wild Oats) to pick up some sumptuous cheeses…and let’s go out and breath in the night air and listen to music with the coolest people around in the most dreamy locale available….
Wednesday Night Free Concerts at Deer Valley presented by Frontier Bank:
(this is what us locals call the “free Wednesday night concerts”…always a fun group of laid back individuals who bring lots of wine and usually meet up afterwards at Jean Louis for some dinner…these are Rob’s favorite concerts!)
-June 25th - Motherlode Band
-July 2nd - Joy and Eric (my personal favorite!)
-July 9th - Ryan Hillier
-July 16th - Pat Carnahan
-July 23rd - Fat Soul
-August 12th - Wisebird
-August 20th - John Boy’s Mule
-August 27th - Mudpuddle
St. Regis Big Stars Bright Nights - Concert Series:
(These concerts are a bit more upscale…the tickets cost money and the prices can get a bit hefty but are well worth it! There are two kinds of tickets available, lawn seats - for the common folk
where you bring a blanket and some treats and find an open spot to spread out, lay down under the stars and soak in the music….and then there are the VIP seats - which are little camping chairs which keep you off the dirty ground and put you up closer to the stage away from the fray…
with these seats you get an assigned seat number since the chairs are arranged in neat little rows in a semi circle around the front of the stage…this is the area for the “cool kids” and it’s my favorite place to watch a concert from…these concerts are my favorite series mostly because I work for the company who is developing the St. Regis hotel and I’ve been involved with the project since it’s infancy…so this is a thing near and dear to my heart….plus, Teri Orr and the Park City Performing Arts Foundation have an amazing cause to support with your ticket purchases…FYI )
-July 12th - Marc Cohen and Aimee Mann
-July 17th - Feist
-July 28th - Lucinda Williams
-August 17th - Golden Dragon Performers
-August 19th - Boz Skaggs
-August 26th - Gypsy Kings
-August 30th - Dwight Yoakam
Utah Symphony Series / Deer Valley Music Festival:
(This series of concerts is put on obviously by the Utah Symphony. The tickets aren’t free but the music is wonderful. Rob and I haven’t been to as many of these concerts as we have been to the other series for no particular reason…but I think we’ll try to get to these more often this year…I’m feeling myself getting into a more classical music kind of mood this time around )
-July 4th - Patriotic Favorites
-July 19th - Tchaicovsky’s 1912 Overture
-July 25th - David Cho and Utah Symphony
-July 26th - Classical Mystery Tour
-August 1st - Time For Three and Dvorak’s New World Symphony
-August 2nd - Bravo Broadway
-August 7th - Utah Opera Presents Gilbert and Sullivan’s HMS Pinafore **Dress Rehersal**
-August 8th and 9th - Utha Opera Presents Gilber and Sullivan’s HMS Pinafore
-August 15th - The Mormon Tabbernacle Choir with the Utah Symphony
-August 16th - Gladys Night with the Utah Symphony
So hopefully this list will help you to make your Deer Valley Concert Series plans this Summer Season…let us know if you plan on attending any of these and we’ll try to meet up with you at the concert to toast to our wonderful place in the world - Park City - and the great opportunites for culture and fun that it brings us!
